Tafseer means explaining what Allah’s words mean — the meaning of each word, why the verse was revealed, and how it applies to life. The Arabic word tafsir comes from a root meaning “to uncover,” so tafsir al-Quran is simply uncovering the meaning behind the text your child is already reciting.

Translation is not tafseer

This is the difference most parents are never told. A tarjama (translation) swaps Arabic words for English ones. A tafseer explains them. Translation tells you a verse mentions the People of the Elephant. Tafseer tells you who they were, what they came to destroy, and why Allah stopped them with birds.

Tafseer for kids: how we explain it to a 7-year-old

Take Surah Al-Fil. A translation gives your child an army and an elephant. In class, your child hears the whole story: a king who built a rival house of worship, an army marching on the Kaaba, an elephant that refused to move, and small birds carrying stones. Then the teacher asks the question that makes it stick — “Who protected the Kaaba? And who protects you?”

Same verse. Completely different child walks away from it. That shift — from words to meaning — is the whole point of tafseer for kids.
